If you feel at present that you don't have enough friends in your life, one reason may be that you have let yourself become too busy to make time for the relationships you already have. Starting and keeping friendship requires effort and commitment. Many of us let our lives become so busy with work and other commitments that we don't get around to scheduling time for pleasure and renewal with the friends, relatives and acquaintances we already have.

Making the effort to call your friends more regularly and to accept more of the invitations you receive from others can improve your social life in a hurry!

Are there any people you could call right now and be assured of a pleasant welcome? Are there people that you could count on to help you in time of difficulty? Can you have close talks with them? Do you have fun when you are together? Are you happy to have them in your life?

If you haven't seen much of them lately, is it because you have become too busy? Have you grown apart? Was there an argument?

If the main reason why you haven't been getting together with the people you already know

is that you have gotten too busy, take a good look at how you spend your time. Compare it with

your real values and priorities in life. Is your busy lifestyle really bringing you the quality of life

  that you want?

If you have become too busy for friends, why has this happened? Are you seeking material

toys in your life at the expense of relationships with other human beings? Have you allowed your time to be overcommitted because you never say “No” to anyone? Do you insist on doing things

yourself that could be left to others? If so, why? Do you believe that everything depends on you?

Examine whether the way you are now spending your time accurately reflects your deepest values and priorities. Make sure that you schedule adequate time for the things that are truly most important to you.

If you really want to keep friends in your life, make a space in your schedule, and a space in your heart for them.

People in several American states may be surprised to see cars on city streets without a driver. Experimental driverless vehicles now are legal in Florida, Nevada and California. They are pointing the way to a future that is not far down the road. The high

tech company Google has a number of self-driving cars, which had covered 480,000 kilometers by August. Volvo is among the companies doing road tests and says it plans to sell driverless cars by 2024.

In September, California Governor Jerry Brown signed an act to allow autonomous vehicles on the roads of his state. “Today we're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality — the driverless car.” The technology for these cars includes cameras, radar and motion sensors. The systems have been improved through competitions sponsored by the U. S. government agency DARPA. Engineer Richard Mason of the Rand Corporation helped design driverless vehicles for DARPA challenge races.

Cars have become much more fuel-efficient, and new electronic features are

making Hondas safer, said Angie Nucci of Honda America.

“A camera on the passenger-side mirror actually engaged on your guiding screen so you can safely change lanes.” Other safety features include warning systems on the front and the sides of the cars.

  These systems help drivers,

but don't replace them. Curator Leslie Kendall of the Petersen Automotive Museum said autonomous cars will make the high ways safer.

“By taking out drivers, you also remove most risks of an accident,” Kendall said. He said,

“Consumers, however, may be unwilling to lose control. It may take them time to come to realize that the technology is indeed reliable, but it will have to prove itself first.”

Mason said the technology already works and the biggest challenge now is getting down the cost for driverless vehicles from hundreds of thousands of dollars to something more affordable. He said this will happen as the technology is improved.

1.According to the passage, California Governor Jerry Brown ________.

A.is for the idea of having driverless cars

B.sponsored the DARPA competition to improve the driverless system

C.has already bought a new autonomous car

D.thinks that driving safety is the most important issue in his state

2.What is the role of the systems mentioned in Paragraph 3?

A.They can help cars run much faster.

B.They can take the place of drivers now.

C.They can make cars run without fuel.

D.They can help people drive more safely.

3.In Kendall's opinion, who probably don't rely on the driverless cars at first?

A.Managers in the high tech company Google.

B.Officers from the U. S. government agency DARPA.

  C.Car consumers.

  D.Vehicle designers.

4.According to Richard Mason, what is the biggest challenge for driverless cars?

A.They need to have more comfortable seats.

B.They are now too expensive for consumers.

C.They are travelling at a low speed.

D.They are not favored by car racers.

1.解析:選A 細(xì)節(jié)理解題根據(jù)第二段“California Governor Jerry Brown signed an act to allow autonomous vehicles on the roads of his state.”加利福尼亞州長(zhǎng)Jerry Brown簽署了允許這種自動(dòng)(無(wú)人駕駛的)汽車(chē)在本州行駛的法令由此可見(jiàn)Jerry Brown是支持這個(gè)想法的故選A解析:選D 細(xì)節(jié)理解題文章第三段主要描述這種無(wú)人駕駛汽車(chē)的安全性能故選D解析:選C 推理判斷題根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段“Consumers, however, may be unwilling to lose control. It may take them time to come to realize that the technology is indeed reliable, but it will have to prove itself first.”可知Kendall認(rèn)為消費(fèi)者可能不愿意失去(對(duì)車(chē)子)的控制可能要花一段時(shí)間才能意識(shí)到這項(xiàng)技術(shù)的可靠性但是這項(xiàng)技術(shù)首先要證明自己(是可靠的)由此可推斷出汽車(chē)的消費(fèi)者在一開(kāi)始可能不信任這項(xiàng)技術(shù)故選C解析:選B 推理判斷題根據(jù)文章最后一段“Mason said the technology already works and the biggest challenge now is getting down the cost for driverless vehicles from hundreds of thousands of dollars to something more affordable.”

In the mid-1950s,I was a somewhat bored early-ado lescent male student who believed that doing_any_more_than_necessary_

was_wasted_effort.One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment.

In Mrs.Totten's eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson,Indiana,we were learning to add and subtract decimals (小數(shù)).

Our teacher typically assigned daily homework, which would be recited in class the following day.On most days, our grades were based on our oral answers to homework questions.

Mrs.Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.

Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students,it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time,I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations.

What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs.Totten made her way from the beginning of the class,I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get.I tried to work it out before she got to me,but I had brain freeze and couldn't function.

When Mrs.Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I'd got for problem No.14.“I...I didn't get anything,”I answered, and my face felt warm.

  “Correct,”she said.

It turned out that the correct answer was zero.

What did I learn that day?First, always do all your homework.Second,in real life it isn't always what you say but how you say it that matters.Third,I would never make it as a mathematician.

If I could choose one school day that taught me the most,it would be that one.

C.It is right to stick to one's belief.

D.It is enough to do the necessary.

2.Usually,Mrs.Totten asked her students to ________.

  A.recite their homework together

  B.grade their homework themselves

  C.a(chǎn)nswer their homework questions orally

D.check the answers to their homework questions

.The author could work out which questions to answer since the teacher always ________.

A.a(chǎn)sked questions in a regular way

B.walked up and down when asking questions

C.chose two or three questions for the students

D.requested her students to finish their usual questions

4.The author failed to get the questions he had expected because ________.

A.the class didn't begin as usual

B.several students didn't come to school

C.he didn't try hard to make his estimate

D.Mrs.Totten didn't start from the back of the class

根據(jù)第三段最后一句“On most days, our grades were based on our oral answers to homework questions”可知,大多數(shù)時(shí)候,老師只要求學(xué)生口頭回答家庭作業(yè)。

根據(jù)第六段第一句“What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate”可知,作者沒(méi)有料到的是有幾個(gè)學(xué)生缺課,沒(méi)有來(lái)學(xué)校,所以他沒(méi)有估計(jì)對(duì)自己要回答的問(wèn)題。故選B。

You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how:

Plan your time carefully. When planning your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying.

  2.________

A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.

Make good use of your time in class.

  3.________

Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material.

  4.________

If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you'll remember it longer.

Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't be over worried.

  5.________

You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

A.There are other methods that might help you with your studying.

B.Don't forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.

C.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says.

D.No one can become a top student unless he or she works hard.

E.Maybe you are an average student.

F.Make full use of class time to take notes of what the teacher says in class.

G.This will help you understand the next class.
