The World Health Organization is using a new combination of drugs to treat African trypanosomiasis disease, also known as sleeping sickness. The drugs will be given out in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Officials says the new treatment has fewer side effects. It is also more effective and less costly than the drugs traditionally used.In addition, the new treatment reduces the number of injections needed. And it shortens the amount of time patients must spend in hospital.
Sleeping sickness threatens millions of people in 36 countries in Africa. Most live in poor rural areas. The disease is caused by the trypanosoma parasite(寄生物).It is spread to humans through the bite of infected tsetse flies.Common signs of sleeping sickness include fever, headaches, extreme tiredness and pain in the muscles and joints.Early identification of the disease may be difficult because many infected people do not show any immediate symptoms.Over time, the parasites invade the central nervous system. The disease causes sleep disorders, mental confusion, personality changes and speech problems. If left untreated, sleeping sickness kills.
It’s estimated that about 60,000 people are currently infected with the disease. It develops in two different forms.Trypanosoma gambiense is responsible for 90% of the reported cases of sleeping sickness.People infected with this form may develop the disease over many years without any major symptoms.Until now the drug melarsoprol is used to treat patients in the advanced stage of sleeping sickness. But the drug requires many painful injections several times a day for several weeks. It also causes bad side effects, some of which can be deadly.
In Uganda,a new study has confirmed earlier research linking the spread of sleeping sickness to infected farm animals. The writers of the study have called for stronger rules requiring cattle to be treated before being sold at market.
1.The following are the advantages of the new treatment EXCEPT______.
A.having an intended effect
B.low price
C.reducing injections and hospitalization
D.no bad side effects
2.Which of the following statements is WRONG?
A.Nine people in ten infected with sleeping sickness in Africa result from trypanosoma gambiense.
B.The invasion of sleeping sickness may lead to death.
C.The drug melarsoprol is used to treat patients in the early stage of sleeping sickness.
D.There are many disadvantages for the drug melarsoprol to control sleeping sickness.
3.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that______.
A.farm animals infected by trypanosoma parasite is a main source of sleeping sickness
B.a(chǎn)ll the animals must be get rid of by the government
C.there isn’t any rules requiring cattle to be treated before being sold at market in Uganda
D.cattle is forbidden to enter the market before being infected by trypanosoma parasite

I’d been living on Anfu Road in Shanghai for about six months when I discovered the lane.I was hesitant to use it.“I feel like I’m walking into someone’s home,”I told a friend.“Oh,everyone uses the lanes,”she assured me.
Since moving to China from the United States,I had been wanting a neighborhood where local people knew my face,my routine, and therefore,a little something about my life.
So one day, feeling brave and a little lonely,I turned from Anfu Road into the lane.At the mouth, four or five cooks were cleaning potatoes and greens.A little way down,a woman was hanging her freshly washed clothes on a line.Midway down the lane,I saw an old woman sitting on a chair with a bowl in her lap.She was cleaning beans.
“Nihao,”I said as I passed.She didn’t even look up.
A few days later,I took the same route and I saw the same old woman sitting on the same chair with the same bowl. She was sorting greens.
“Nihao,”I said,this time a little louder.She didn’t even look up.
This went on for months. It bothered me,but I figured she had her reasons. After all,I was just a foreigner, passing through on my way to someplace else.
Then my husband and I adopted our daughter and brought her home to Shanghai.Tully was 8 months old.
On the first day that I walked with Tully, the cooks dropped their knives and potatoes and stared.I smiled at them.“Nihao,”I said. They smiled back. Then I saw the old woman on the chair. She was watching me.
As I passed,Tully made the funny noise she liked to make and the old woman met my eyes and smiled.“Nihao,”she said to me.
And that was it.Motherhood—the shared experience that crosses all cultural lines—moved this old woman to finally acknowledge the foreigner who wanted so much to be a part of her neighborhood.I call my daughter my ambassador of love.
5.Why was the author hesitant to use the lane?
A.She wasn’t willing to share the lane with others.
B.She felt like stepping into others’homes.
C.She was afraid of being refused.
D.She was a newcomer and wasn’t skilled at using it.
6.Which of the following about the author is NOT true, according to the text?
A.She saw several cooks at the mouth of the lane.
B.She saw a woman hanging washed clothes.
C.She went into the lane because of the strong sense of loneliness.
D.She saw an old woman midway down the lane.
7.What did the author think when the old woman didn’t response?
A.The old woman was concentrating on other things.
B.The old woman didn’t have time.
C.She was not polite enough.
D.She was a foreigner who was just passing by.
8.What did the author want ever since she moved China?
A.She wanted to learn Chinese from her neighbours.
B.She wanted to have a good relationship with her neighbors.
C.She wanted to learn more about China from her neighbours.
D.She wanted to rent a house with a lane.
二、任務(wù)型讀寫(xiě)
閱讀下面短文,根據(jù)所讀內(nèi)容在表格中的空白處填入恰當(dāng)?shù)膯卧~。注意:每個(gè)空格只填一個(gè)單詞。
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so,however.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.Here is how.
1.Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time.First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc.then decide a good, regular time for studying.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment.A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2.Find a good place to study.Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room.Free from everything but study materials. No games, radios,or television. When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
3.Make good use of your time in class.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say.Really listening in class means less work later.Taking notes will help you remember what your teachers say.
4.Study regularly. When you get home from school,go over your notes.Review the important points that your teachers mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5.Develop a good attitude to tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
