but 類
① but for+名詞和but that+從句，譯為“要不是，如果沒有”
But for the rain we should have had a pleasant journey.

②Anything but
Anything 等復合代詞或復合副詞加but，通常表否定之意。

一些介詞表抽象概念時，也可譯為否定。
①Above,表能力品質超出某種范圍
②Below /beneath：與…不相稱，不值得
③Beyond：表示不可能；為…所不及
④Under：未達到，未滿足
⑤Within：不超過，不出
He's above suspicion (= He is completely trusted).
他無可置疑。
He considers such jobs beneath him.
他覺得這種工作有失他的身份。(即”和他的身份不相稱”)
The situation is beyond our control.

the last 最不…的
He would be the last person who would do such a thing.
他最不可能干這種事情。

We cannot too strongly urge upon you the importance of this matter.
對此事，我們無論怎樣向你強調其重要性都不會過分。
(cannot …too/can never…too/can hardly…too通常譯為“再…也不為過”) ：這一結構的實質是：過分否定，導致肯定。因而此結構中的can’t可改用impossible，not可采用其變體never、hardly等，因此上句也可改寫為：We are impossible too strongly urge upon you the importance of this matter.
I can never thank you enough for your generosity.
對您的慷慨大度我永遠感謝不盡。
(can never do enugh也有“在…也不為過”的意思)
can’t help doing 表示“禁不住做某事”時，也可看作是“形否意肯”。
I can't help feeling sorry for the poor man.

此外，還有can’t help but… 意為“必須，只好”。
