One reason for this is probably that radio as emotional companionship does not require attentive eyes being fixed on the screen. Whereas trolling online might become an uncomfortable activity, and whereas watching television might be considered as the ultimate in escapism, only radio can help put people more at ease with the environment, indoors or outdoors. Like mobile phones, radio supports peoples daily activities, and every hand phone of course has its own radio.
