地球的上空突然出現(xiàn)了十二架貝殼狀的不明飛行物，懸浮在十二個(gè)不同的國(guó)家的上空，外星人向人類發(fā)出了訊號(hào)，但人類卻并不能夠解讀。美國(guó)軍方找到了語言學(xué)家露易絲（艾米·亞當(dāng)斯 Amy Adams 飾）和物理學(xué)家伊恩（杰瑞米·雷納 Jeremy Renner 飾），希望兩人能夠合作破解外星人的語言之謎。
經(jīng)過數(shù)次的接觸，露易絲發(fā)現(xiàn)外星人使用了一種極為特殊的圓環(huán)狀的文字，并逐漸了解了其中的奧妙。由于一直無法確定外星人來到地球的真正目的，中國(guó)、俄羅斯等四國(guó)決定對(duì)外星人發(fā)起進(jìn)攻，美方亦決定放棄研究將全部人員撤離，在這個(gè)節(jié)骨眼上，露易絲終于明白了外星人的意圖，利用外星人賦予她的特殊的“武器”，露易絲以一人之力改變了未來。
