冠詞是一種虛詞，本身不能獨立使用，只能附著在一個名詞上幫助說明這名詞的含義。英語中的冠詞有兩個，一是定冠詞the ;另一是不定冠詞，有兩個形式，a或an【a用在以輔音開頭的詞前，an用在以元音開頭的詞前】。
1.不定冠詞的基本用法
用來表示一這個數(shù)量，意思和one差不多：
The plan will be ready in a week or two. 計劃一兩周內(nèi)就可定好。
也可用來表示某一個：
Even a child can answer this question. 就是小孩子也能回答這個問題。
2.定冠詞的基本用法
表示某個或某些特定的人或物：
Give me the book . 把那本書給我。
Where are the other comrades? 其他同志在哪里?
第二次提到某東西時：
There is a book on the desk and the book is mine. 桌子上有一本書，那本書是我的。
表示世界上獨一無二的東西：
the sun , the moon , the globe , the world , the sky , the universe .
和一個形容詞連用，代表一類人或東西：
the rich，the poor，the deaf，the blind，the dead，the oppressed，the unemployed等。
